Not your Bubby's sewing class... In this class we will be learning to make fun, funky projects that you will be proud to wear and use! You will learn all sorts of cool sewing and decorative techniques that will be used to make awesome accessories like: headbands, ribbon flower pins, bags, skirts and more. You'll even have a chance to design and make your own fashion line in miniature! This class is for all levels - so whether you're a person who doesn't know how to thread a needle, or a person whose closet is already chock full of hand-sewn creations, this class is full of new things to learn.

Mind Lab (M-4)

Become a game-playing expert, develop life and thinking skills and have fun all at the same time! While playing thinking games from all over the world, students will improve their problem solving skills, decision making, logical and mathematical thinking, and creative and critical thinking. Participants will learn how to better handle social and emotional issues, learn from their own mistakes, deal with success and failure, and find effective ways of communication. Mind Lab has even been added to the SAR 6th and 8th grade elective programs! A great time will be had by all!

Mixed Martial Arts Krav (M-8)

MMA Krav is the only American Jewish sport, a unique blend of Israeli Krav Maga, boxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Students will build skills through the use of strengthening exercises, inspirational stories of Jewish heroism and the study of highly efficient self-defense techniques used by the IDF, the FBI, CIA and local police. MMA Krav provides a more extensive, intensive and practical training program than is usually offered in other martial arts schools. This in turn allows students to get a fuller and quicker grasp of self-defense techniques, utilizing conditioning methods such as Russian kettle bells, used by famous UFC fighters and OlympicWrestlers. Classes are tailored to each student’s physical condition and prior training, though no previous experience is necessary. Instructors are Nehemia Kramer (sambo specialist, veteran of the IDF and anti-Soviet demonstrations) and UFC professional fighter Waylon Lowe (star of reality TV's "Ultimate Fighter: UK vs. US", American Top Team member).

Aviation Club: The Hobby Quest (M-10)

All new models and instructors for this semester!! The building and flying of model airplanes has been a popular hobby since the days of the Wright brothers and even before. In The Hobby Quest: Aviation Club, we will build planes from scratch, during which each child learns to read plans, work with rulers, make necessary calculations and to distinguish between different hobby tools. Each student will learn about the elementary history, physics and properties of flight while producing at least two model airplanes. The program will conclude outdoors where we set our gliders in motion and fly our models.

Learn basic Karate technique and movement. Develop eye-motor coordination, focus, and concentration through fun activities and karate games. Belts will be awarded through the Tora Dojo Martial Arts Association for an extra fee. New students encouraged to purchase karate uniform (information to be given out in class). Yogi Beans is a program created by Lauren Rosenfeld, a certified yoga and Pilates instructor. The program is designed to help children develop better body awareness, coordination, flexibility and self-confidence. Yoga is a wonderful way to introduce a physical activity that is noncompetitive; it will instill a sense of calmness and relaxation in your child.

Trophies will be awarded to all students who complete the semester. SAR sends a chess team to Chess Tournaments as well as hosting tournaments ourselves.

Explore with Morah Rita-Rivka the idea of 'chesed', why we should care, and how we can put it into practice in innumerable ways in our daily lives. Learn about wonderful role models, and see how particular mitzvot can develop our ability to be 'baalei chesed'. Brainstorm together, as well as develop and personalize our responses. Work on hands-on projects that will make a real difference in the lives of others.
