SAR HS ö Champions in New York Metropolitan Area BJE Science Olympiad 2006!
    Olmpiad Trophy

We are thrilled to announce that SAR HS came in Champions in the BJE Science Olympiad competition this week - earning 1st place overall, out of ten Yeshiva high school teams!!!!

Sunday morning, March 5, over 150 students from all over the New York Metropolitan area came to SAR High School to participate in this full-day competition. The Science Olympiad, sponsored by the Board of Jewish Education, is a wonderful, fun, and challenging event that engages students in twelve different competitions all geared towards stimulating students to problem solve and think scientifically. Events range from Practical Problem Solving, Experimental Design, Designer Genes, Chemistry Lab, Physics Lab, and Ecology, to Bridge Building (students construct a bridge at home, which they bring in to have judged for both weight and ability to support the largest amount of sand), to Wheeled Vehicle (students build a wheeled vehicle at home which they bring in to see which makes it to the finish line in a straight line and powered only by a mechanical device ö ours was cleverly powered by air from a blown-up balloon!).

The events are drawn from the National Science Olympiad, which is a national nonprofit organization whose goal is to increase interest in science on the part of high school students and improve the quality of science education.

Congratulations go to all the SAR team members, with special kudos to the following:

Raanan Cohen and William Herlands - came in 1st place for two separate events: Practical Problem Solving, and Road Scholar
Dina Green and Rachel Schwartz - came in 2nd place for Ecology
Josh Heisler and Alex Saal - came in 2nd place for Wheeled Vehicle
Avi Chanales, Dina Green, and Rachel Schwartz - came in 2nd place for Experimental Design

All the other students on the SAR HS team get a great yasher koach too - although they didn't win medals, it is because they scored high marks in the other competitions, that we took the prize for overall top score, which was a compilation of the total score of each of the 12 competitions.

Thanks also to Dr. Prince and Ms. Rieser, who together with us coached the students ö each in 3 events in preparation for the Olympiad. Go SAR HS!!

Torah Temimah-- SAR's New Bi-Weekly Torah Publication

Initiated by student editors Josh Itzkowitz and Adam Friedman, the SAR High School students have begun publishing a bi-weekly Torah publication entitled Torah Temimah. With a dedicated staff of assistant editors, copy editor, contributors, layout editors and business managers, the students have just completed their second issue of the Torah Temimah. Students distribute Torah Temimah to fifteen Shuls in Riverdale, Westchester, Manhattan, Bergen and Rockland counties.

Torah Temimah contains articles written by students and faculty about topics in the weekly Parashah and topics related to upcoming Yamim Tovim (we have had a Tu BâShvat and Purim issue). In addition there are several features in the Torah Temimah that attempt to portray something of the unique SAR spirit. Each issue has a ãFellows Funhouseä which allows our Israeli and American Beit Midrash Fellows to share their Torah with the community. In addition, there is an opinion page on which there is a student opinion piece entitled ãHoly Land Happeningsä which gives students a chance to express their thoughts and feelings about events in Eretz Yisrael and a ãpoliticalä cartoon in our Op-Art section. On the last page all of our studentsâ voices are heard through the publication of excerpts from our online student/faculty discussion forum.

If you are interested in sponsoring future issues or in having your Shul receive copies of Torah Temimah, email us at Sartorah@gmail.com

    • Science Research Project of Matthew Wieder (â07) Selected as Top Winner at NY City Science and Engineering Fair
      weider

Matthew Wieder's science research project investigating titanium dioxide, a common ingredient of sunscreen lotions, was accepted last month for entry in the NYC Science and Engineering Fair, and on February 26, it went on display with 850 other imaginative and sophisticated science projects done by New York City's brightest young scientists.

Matthew's project was selected as a top winner from this event and he will now go on to the second level of competition at Polytechnic University's NYCSEF on March 15, 2006. Congratulations, Matthew! And good luck, in the next round!

Matthew did his research as part of the Garcia Centerâs Materials Research Science and Engineering Program at the State University of New York-Stony Brook this past summer. He conducted independent research on the destructive effects of titanium dioxide on DNA and how the damage might be reduced. Titanium dioxide is a common ingredient in sunscreens. Ironically, sunscreens, which are intended to reduce the damage caused by the sunâs ultraviolet rays, contain a substance that actually seems to cause DNA damage. Since this substance, titanium dioxide, is an oxidant, Matthew reasoned that antioxidants, such as those found in green tea, might reduce the DNA damage caused by titanium dioxide.

Matthew designed and carried out experiments to test this hypothesis. He used a confocal microscope (picture is attached) to measure chromosome diameters in his experimental and control groups, as well as electrophoresis on lambda DNA. His preliminary results show that antioxidants do indeed reduce the damage caused by the titanium dioxide. He intends to follow up his research this summer.

The Garcia Center is currently accepting applications from high school students to do research this summer. If your 10th or 11th grader would like to do research in this program in which students are mentored through a research project, s/he should see Ms. Brandriss or Mr. Goodman immediately. The program is from June 26 ö August 11. Provisions are made for Frum students. Housing is at Stony Brook University.

The Research Scholar Program for High School Students offers the opportunity for high school students to perform research on the forefronts of science and technology together with GARCIA Program faculty and staff.

Students work as part of focused research teams and are taught to make original contributions of interest to the scientific community. In addition to entering national competitions, the students are encouraged to publish in refereed scientific journals and to present their results at national conferences. The goal of the program is to convey to the students the excitement the scientists enjoy daily in research.

Students Get First-Hand Look at Lab Focusing on Protein Receptors in Heart Cells
      labgroup

On Wednesday, March 1 a group of 10th and 11th graders in SAR HS's Science Research program, visited the lab of Dr. Susan Steinberg at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Steinberg described to the students her research on the role of protein receptors in heart cell membranes, and the applications that her research has towards treatment of heart disease with drugs that act on these receptors.

She explained why drugs previously used to treat heart patients, have been replaced by beta blocking drugs, the difference between Beta 1 and Beta 2 receptors, as well as research that is currently being pursued, based on recent discoveries about the difference in action of Beta 1 and Beta 2 receptors. It was so enriching for the students to experience Dr. Steinberg's passion for her subject, to hear why she went into research and the line of thinking that is leading researchers to pursue drugs that act more specifically than the previous ones.

The students loved the tour of the labs - from seeing heart cells beating in a Petri dish to watching how a few drops of adrenalin caused them to double their rate of beating, to manipulating gloves in an hypoxia chamber, to discovering an ultracentrifuge!

      Rosh Chodesh Adar

On Rosh Chodesh Adar the spirit was lively and festive. The entire school davened shacharit together in the beit midrash and then after breakfast we proceeded to the gym for our festivities. As is our custom on Rosh Chodesh we began the program with some inspirational thoughts. Ayal Samuels, a graduate of the SAR Academy and current student at Yeshiva University spoke to the studnet body about his experience working with the local population in Honduras and helping them to build a school. Ayal delivered an inspiring message and that helped get the ruach going during our dancing.

The band was great and the dancing was energetic as everyone got into the Adar mood. Of course the fun was enhanced by the "interesting" costumes that students wore for our own Wacky Wednesday of Rosh Chodesh Adar.

      Mock Trial In Session
      balanceofpower

The Mock Trial team was victorious in its first case which was argued on March 6 at the New York State Courthouse. This yearâs case is the State of New York vs. Terry OâNeal, in which a high school senior has been charged with second degree manslaughter in the death of a fellow student who was killed when the defendantâs car flipped over during a school-day lunch trip.

Our team consists of six students playing the parts of lawyers and six playing the parts of witnesses. The next trial involves our prosecution side arguing on March 9. Itâs amazing to see the dignity, grace under fire and impressive legal expertise that these students are exhibiting.

Special thanks to Stuart Levi for all his time and efforts as our lawyer-advisor.
